Heartbeat by Sharon Creech (Harper Trophy, 2004)
genre: Poetry, realistic
ages: 9-12 years
honors: Maine Student Book Award (2008)
review: In Annie’s house, her grandpa is beginning to forget everything from his Alzheimer’s, her mom is pregnant with her new baby bother and she’s got an odd assignment of drawing the same apple everyday for 100 days. This is a lot to think about, so Annie runs (always barefoot, but not always alone) listening to the thump, thump, thump of her heart.
opinion: In another fantastic (and quick) book of free verse, Creech gives an examination of the cycles of life and how important it is to do what makes you happy in your heart.
ideas: There are so many things in this book that would appeal to all readers: it’s about running, about drawing, old grandparents, new brothers and it’s quick!
