beam me up, Scotty...

Star Trek directed by J. J. Abhrams (2009)

genre: Science Fiction, adventure

rating: PG-13

honors: Academy Award Oscar for Best Achievement in Makeup (2010)

Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films Saturn Award for Best Makeup (2010)

… and 12 other awards and 45 nominations

review: This 2009 movie introduces a new generation to the early days of James T. Kirk, Mr. Spock and the rest of the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise. In the forming of the crew, Kirk and Spock come together to battle an alien ship that destroyed Spock’s Vulcan planet.

opinion: This is rated PG-13 and there is a lot of fighting and explosions, in addition to mild language and sexual suggestions. But the story was engaging and kept me on the edge of my seat for the whole two hours.

ideas: While, I let my kids watch it at 12 and 13, I’d be wary of suggesting it to all tweens. However, for others who are familiar with the original series or fans of science fiction, this movie will not disappoint.
