a boy walks into a toymaker's shop...

Noah Barleywater Runs Away by John Boyne (David Fickling Books, 2011)

genre: Adventure, folktales

honors: none

review: Problems are easier for Noah to ignore. So when the problems get so bad at home, he decides to run away. On his journey, he comes across all kinds of characters and a couple of villages that bring him to the third village and the magic toymaker. The toymaker explains to Noah the story behind each of the man’s puppets, and those stories change both Noah and the toymaker.

opinion: I got this as an ARC, and haven’t read the author’s other books, specifically The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. But he writes this book so younger readers will appreciate the fairy-tale like story, and older adults will enjoy the underlying messages within the tales.

ideas: I’d suggest this book to older tweens, teens and adults. It’s for those readers who can suspend their belief and grasp the reality beneath.
