opinion: Over the course of the book, the boy opens up his mind about poetry and starts writing his own. Through his words in verse, the stories about him, his dog and the death of the dog come out. {I think} He felt better putting the story into verse than verbalizing it.
ideas: Besides being a quick read, this is a great book to introduce free verse to students.
