the other mother...

Coraline by Neil Gaiman (Harper Trophy, 2003)

genre: Suspense, horror, fantasy

age: 12+ years

honors: none

review: Coraline is bored because she has no one to play with: she has no siblings, her parents are always busy, and her neighbors are all old and more than slightly-weird. In search of entertainment, Coraline enters into an alternative world through a little door in her living room. There she finds everything she wants, especially parents that aren’t too busy for her, however the excitement turns sour when she needs to save herself, her parents and three others from the scary thing that rules the other world.

opinion: This is my first Neil Gaiman book, and it was scary! He sets a dark and gloomy tone what is only exacerbated with the enticing evil lurking under the surface of the things Coraline seeks!!

ideas: I’d recommend this book to older tweens looking for something scary. This would be a great addition to a Halloween display.
