The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan (Miramax Books, 2006)
series: Percy Jackson and the Olympians (#1)
genre: Adventure, fantasy
ages: 10-14 years
honors: none
review: Percy Jackson is a 12 year old who struggles with ADHD, dyslexia and his smelly stepdad. But to make matters worse, he is also finding out that he’s also a half-blood and his dad is Poseidon, king of the sea. To make matters worse, he is whisked off to Camp Half-Blood when his royal blood is sniffed out by the Furies. But while he’s at camp he becomes friends with Annabeth, and the two (with Grover the Satyr) set off on a quest for Zeus’ lightning bolt.
opinion: This is a great adventure into Greek history, as well as a reminder that the gods aren’t either good or bad… just self-serving. Percy learns this as he comes into contact with them as well as other characters from the well known myths.
ideas: When a reader has exhausted D’Auliers’ book, this is a great read to dig out the ancient characters set in modern times.
