The Joy of Spooking: Fiendish Deeds by P.J. Bracegirdle (Margaret K. McElderry Books, 2008)
genre: Suspense, humor
ages: 9-12 years
honors: none
review: Joy is an 11 year old, proudly from the town of Spooking and a fan of the horror author E. A. Peugeot. She is sure that the author is from Spooking as well, and one of his stories is based on the bog where corrupt businessmen are planning a water park that will destroy the town of Spooking. Joy and her reluctant little brother work toward saving the bog and the Bog Fiend.
opinion: This is a cross between humor and horror because while you’re caught in the dark suspense, the characters do something so silly you literally laugh out loud. While she manages to save the bog, the author has left the door open for more stories about Joy.
ideas: As the book is set around Halloween, it would be fun to read this book to a group of listeners in October.
