many, small blue faces...

A Hat Full of Sky by Terry Pratchett (Harper Collins, 2004)

series: Tiffany Aching Advetnures (#2), Discworld

genre: Fantasy, adventure

ages: 10 -14 years

honors: Mythopoeic Fantasy Award for Children’s Literature (2005)

Pacific Northwest Young Reader’s Choice Award (2007)

review: The six-inch-high Wee Free Men, Mistress Weatherwax and Tiffany Aching are back for another romp. Tiffany is now a witch’s apprentice, and has to save herself from the Hiver—a disembodied monster that has made plans to settle inside of Tiffany.

opinion: The Wee Free Men made me laugh enough to carry me through the creative, and complex, story. Younger readers may have trouble reading the Nac Mac Feegle’s Scottish inflections, and readers who don’t favor fantasy may be overwhelmed with the intricacies of the story.

ideas: The Nan Mac Feegles are similar to leprechauns and pixies, so librarians could encourage these books and the small magical creatures to fans of fantasy.
