The Great Hamster Massacre by Katie Davies, illustrated by Hannah Shaw (Beach Lane Books, 2010)
genre: Humor, realistic, animals
age: 9-12 years
honors: none
review: Even though their mom said that she would “never, ever have another hamsters” because they were bad news, she gave in and finally allowed Anna and her brother, Tom, to have two hamsters—two girl hamsters—for their very own. Sadly, their pleasure is so short lived. Just five weeks after the hamsters come home, what seems to be two girl hamsters turns out to be one boy hamster, one girl hamster with its back legs chewed off, and 8 dead baby hamsters. No one can give Anna and Tom the answer for the massacre, but with their neighbor, Suzanne, they work to solve the mystery.
opinion: This book was a bit too gruesome for me. It was gross to think about Tom and Anna walking into their room to see blood and dead bodies all over the hamster cage. There were funny parts, not enough for me though.
ideas: Some kids are okay with this gruesome stuff, and this book is for those kids looking for something grisly yet funny.
