get your Uke on...

Ukulele Songs by Eddie Vedder (Monkeywrench, Inc., 2011)

genre: Rock

age: 12 years +

review: As lead man for Pearl Jam, Eddie Vedder picks up a ukulele—the four-stringed instrument popular in Hawaii—and gives a new facet to the rock genre and new dimension to one of the Grunge greats. The album incorporates new and old songs with some duets (Chan Marshall), and all using the ukulele.

opinion: My kids’ music teacher is using the ukulele to teach fingering on stringed instruments, so when they heard that this was coming out, they asked me to buy it. I’m pretty sure I’d not have bought a whole CD featuring ukulele music, even if it was with Eddie Vedder. However, I like it. I was surprised on how easy it is to listen to, and makes your brain drift to a beachy paradise.

favorite: Sleeping by Myself

ideas: If other kids are learning basic fingering for ukuleles and guitars, they may be interested in listening to something non-traditional like this CD.
