are you a gifted child looking for special opportunities...

The Mysterious Benedict Society by Trenton Lee Stewart (Little, Brown and Company, 2007)

genre: Mystery, action, adventure

ages: 10-14 years

honors: Maine Student Book Award, 2009

Massachusetts Children’s Book Award, 2009

Nebraska Golden Sower Award, 2010

review: With the enticing advertisement “Are you a gifted child looking for special opportunities?” four children come under the tutelage of the mysterious Mr. Benedict to thwart the evil doings of the Sender. To do this, they will be challenged mentally, physically as well as emotionally, all they while relying on each other for their individual strengths.

opinion: It’s a hefty book at 485 pages. But once the story has sucked you in, you won’t stop reading to see what happens.

ideas: In classrooms or libraries, leaders could create teams similar to the Mysterious Benedict Society to solve problems that would ask the whole team to work together, appreciate other’s skills and think outside the box.
