like a phoenix...

Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan (Scholastic Press, 2000)

genre: Historical, ethnic

ages: 11-15 years

honors: America’s Award for Children and Young Adult Literature (2000)

Jane Addams Book Award: Children’s Books That Build Peace (2001)

Pura Belpre Award (2002)

Massachusetts Children’s Book Award (2003)

review: Esperanza’s life as she knows it is coming to an abrupt change. She has grown up on her father’s vineyard and is the darling of her home. She’s pampered and catered to, but when her wealthy landowner father is killed in the name of revolution, her mother and Esperanza lose their home and the two of them immigrate to California to begin their life as migrant pickers.

opinion: The author weaves together a story based on the life of her grandmother who left Mexico to work in labor camps in California, and gives an beguiling glimpse into what life was for those workers. This is one of my new favorite books I read for this assignment.

ideas: I’d recommend this book to girls because I really liked the riches-to-rags story, but how she picked herself up and did what she did. Historical girl-power fiction!!
