the blue cooler girl...

Camille McPhee Fell Under the Bus by Kristen Tracy (Delacorte Press, 2009)

genre: Realistic, family, humor

ages: 8-12 years

honors: none

review: Life is hard for Camille McPhee. Her best friend moved to Japan and hasn’t written, her cat Checkers is missing, he’s got low blood sugar and has to carry a blue cooler around with her, and she slipped under the bus one morning. However, Camille is hopeful for better things and manages to be positive when even worse things begin to happen in her life.

opinion: This little girl has a lot going on, other than slipping under the bus. As an only-child she’s caught in the middle of her parent’s impending divorce. She’s a strong character who doesn’t fall into trap of feeling sorry for herself while she watches her life change.

ideas: As this book is written by an Idaho author and is set in Idaho, it could be used as a unit on authors writing about their home states. However, I wouldn’t give this to another child who might be facing her parent’s divorce because there is a tidy, happy ending that is less than realistic.
