The Sorcerer’s Apprentice directed by Jon Turteltaub (2010)
genre: Fantasy, adventure
rating: PG
honors: none
review: Dave Strutler is a normal kind of guy, except for the fact that he’s got some hidden potential that is of interest to sorcerers Balthazar Blake and Maxim Horvath. Balthazar actually needs help to stop Maxim from destroying the city, and that’s why he makes Dave his reluctant apprentice. With a quick, crash course in magic, the two become a potent threat to Maxim.
opinion: With Nicolas Cage, Alfred Molina and Jay Baruchel, this movie is funny and suspenseful all at once. The action may be intense for younger viewers, but is right on target for the 11-14 year olds.
ideas: Of course, anyone who has seen the original Socerer’s Apprentice from the Fantasia films will be intrigued with the live action film… it even comes with overachieving mops.
