Whales on Stilts by M.T. Anderson, illustrated by Kurt Cyrus (Harcourt, 2005)
series: Pals in Peril (#1)
genre: Humor, science-fiction
ages: 9-12 years
honors: none
review: Lily and her friends Jasper and Katie are on a mission to end the plan of world domination by whales… whales on stilts with laser beams! It all comes to light when mild-mannered Lily goes to work with her mild-mannered dad in an old abandoned building run by a weird guy with a sack over his head. With the help of techno-savvy Jasper and Katie—who is the heroine in a series of books about her battles with zombies, Lily comes up with a plan to save the earth.
opinion: This is just a silly book with a preposterous plot line and ridiculous characters… and is loved by most kids.
ideas: Because there are elements of environmental changes and the effect of those changes on the sea life (i.e., whales), this book would be great for supplementing a unit on that topic. Or just for laughs.
