definitely not a dog...

Princess for a Week by Betty Ren Wright, illustrated by Jacqueline Rogers (Holiday House, 2006)

genre: Mystery, suspense

honors: none

review: Roddy is in for a surprise when his mom tells him that Princess is coming to visit… because she’s not the dog he hoped for. She’s a bossy, know-it all girl who is taken over his bedroom and Roddy’s life for one long week. Princess just knows that there are ghosts in the abandoned house down the block, and she convinces Roddy to sneak out, break his mother’s rules and find out the truth.

opinion: This is a quick-paced story that keeps the readers excited to see how it ends. And because there are both strong boy and girl characters as well as a lot of suspense, girls and boys will enjoy reading this book.

ideas: This book has a house as a major character, and could encourage students to write a story with a house as a character—whether it be a scary story or not.
